30 Jul Roosevelt Park Zoo Announces Tiger Cub Names at International Tiger Day Event
The Roosevelt Park Zoo welcomed nearly 850 guest on Tuesday, July 29, 2025, for the International Tiger Day celebration. This event featured a full day of tiger-themed activities, educational enrichment, and family fun, all designed to raise awareness to these amazing creatures.
Families enjoyed hands-on experiences throughout the zoo, including a tiger-themed scavenger hunt, enrichment tables, bounce houses, and story time featuring author Debra Kim Wolf with her book “A Family for Zoya”. Kids who completed the scavenger hunt took home tiger-themed prizes, and guests of all ages had the opportunity to engage with zookeepers and staff to learn more about tiger care and conservation.
A major highlight of the day was the highly anticipated tiger cub name reveal. The 69th Bomb Squadron Booster Club proudly sponsored and selected the names of the four tiger cubs, choosing the titles that reflect military history and the squadron’s legacy:
The Girls:
• Buffy – Inspired by BUFF, the nickname for the B-52
• Afkai – A historical term for bomber aircrafts before being assigned a callsign; a name deeply rooted in bomb squadron culture
The Boys:
• Brogan – Named in honor of a heroic B-52 pilot
• Koshmar – Means “nightmare” in Russian, tying into the squadron’s powerful slogan: “We make nightmares”
“We were honored to have the 69th Bomb Squadron Booster Club apart of this event,” said Dr. Logan Wood, Roosevelt Park Zoo Director, “The names selected are powerful and meaningful, connecting our tiger cubs to a legacy of strength, service, and community pride.”
